Five tips on how to stay awake and alert while driving

Drink water rather than soft drinks

As a driver, people’s lives are in your hands and it is your responsibility to stay alert while behind the wheel.
Check out these five tips to help you in this regard:
1. Have a good night’s rest: Make sure you get enough sleep the night before you travel. This will ensure that you feel refreshed and more alert.

2. Stay hydrated: Drink water instead of soft drinks.
3. Watch your portion size: If you have to pull over and eat, go for small portions. Big, heavy meals can cause you to first feel energised and get a sugar rush, and then crash and become tired. A  great snack is peanuts, as they release energy slower.

4. Music helps you stay in control: Play music in the car, as it allows you some form of noise to keep yourself awake.
5. Fresh air: Either make a stop to stretch your legs or open a window, as these both help to keep you refreshed and your brain awake.
