Splash around safely around the pool

ER24 has provided some safety tips to avoid tragedy in the water, whether at the beach or at the pool.

During the summer holidays visitors flock to the beach and families spend time around the swimming pool.

ER24 has provided some safety tips to avoid tragedy in the water.

On the beach:

  • Swim where there are lifeguards on duty – usually from 10am to 6pm.
  • Make sure you are seen by lifeguards in the water. Don’t swim outside the designated swimming area (outside the flags).
  • Swimmers need to watch out for surfers and surfers need to watch out for swimmers.
  • Don’t drink alcohol on the beach, as it’s both illegal and extremely dangerous.
  • Never swim alone.

Around the pool:

  • Never leave children unattended.
  • Secure the pool area with appropriate barriers which aren’t able to be pushed down by children.
  • Children submerge very quickly, so stay within an arm’s length.
  • Make sure children don’t play rough in the pool and do not jump on top of one another.
  • It is important that adults who supervise are able to swim.
  • Remember, anyone is at risk of drowning.

In addition, parents and guardians are advised to learn basic CPR in case of an emergency. When performing CPR, make sure the person is out of the water, awake and breathing. Shout for help. Finally, ER24 said people could call 084 124 if they found themselves in any type of emergency.
