Manhole without a cover in the municipality’s “front yard”
Residents need to be wary of the open manhole, as it is now covered with dried-up palm fronds

A manhole just outside the Town Hall has been left open for months, with Alfred Duma Local Municipality not doing anything about it.
Nearby shop owners and pedestrians who frequent the area say that the open manhole is dangerous. The hole is about two metres deep, so a person could injure themselves badly if they fell in.
People are now asking how it’s possible for the municipality not to notice an open manhole right next to the Town Hall. The mayor, the municipal manager and councillors walk past every day.

Residents feel that if the municipality “can’t even keep their own front yard clean”, how can they maintain the town?
Alfred Duma Local Municipality was approached by the Ladysmith Gazette for comment and we are currently awaiting their reply.
