Rapist handed 38 years behind bars

He received a sentence of 38 years of imprisonment in total

Justice has been served in the case of 35-year-old rapist, Velo Cassius Mfana.
Mfana, a trusted relative of his rape victims, was convicted and sentenced on January 15 in the Nquthu Magistrate’s Court.
In September 2015, the court heard, he raped a 15-year-old girl and her 41-year-old mother in their home at Esigodini in Mondlo.
The women reported the crime to the police and Mfana was arrested, appearing in court after which he was granted bail.
While out on bail however, Mfana reportedly attacked and raped a pregnant 18-year-old woman at her home on June 22, 2016.
The home is also in the Esigodini area.
After refusing to keep quiet about the incident, she reported the rape at Mondlo Police Station.
The docket was transferred to Vryheid Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) for further investigation.
Following a successful investigation, Mfana was arrested.
He made several appearances in the Nquthu Magistrate’s Court before finally being convicted and sentenced on three counts of rape.
He received a sentence of 38 years of imprisonment in total.
SAPS Zululand Cluster spokesperson, Captain Nkocy Gwala said the rapist’s name should be made public after conviction and sentencing, to send a message to all other rapists at large.
SAPS KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula commended members of SAPS and the FCS Unit for their dedication and for ensuring Mfana received a fitting sentence for his crimes.
