Locals join the #LeaveOurKidsAlone movement

Tensions have been running high in South Africa over a proposed new school
curriculum teaching learners about sexuality.

Aimed at children in Grade 4 to 12, it is intended for roll-out in public schools this year. A Facebook group has since been created called #LeaveOurKidsAlone. This group is for parents, teachers, principals and schools that oppose the current and planned Comprehensive Sex Education (CSE) in the Life Orientation (LO) curriculum.

#LeaveOurKidsAlone is fighting against CSE in South African schools, as well as any classroom-based sex education.
Among those up in arms are local parents and teachers, and they plan to make their voices heard by protesting.

Since the proposed LO curriculum leaked in November 2019, some of the main concerns are that the subject matter is not appropriate for the age of the children who will be targeted (mostly 10-year olds) and that it undermines the
authority of parents.

Another concern is that key stakeholders – including parents, schools and teachers – were not consulted. Anger also
surrounds the fact that it goes against the beliefs of many religions. This anger is reflected in the Facebook group, which gained over 100,000 members in less
than four weeks.

A local mother, Reinette De Lange, has taken it upon herself to get the ball rolling here in Estcourt and calls on all other parents to take a stand too. More and more parents are eager and willing to be counted in.
