Deadly Rinkhals snake found at home in Bombay Road
A Rinkhals spits venom and hoods up just like a Cobra before it attacks
Local snake expert Fanie Cilliers is always on this toes, running around Ladysmith on call-outs to capture and remove unwelcome guests that slide around on their bellies.
After a busy day of removing snakes from homes around town recently, Fanie received a call from Bombay Road.
Residents had spotted a “slithering serpent” and quickly contacted him for assistance.
Fanie explains that the snake was outside the house and was very docile, not trying to attack anything.
It was a Rinkhals that measured around a metre long, which, according to Fanie, is the average length for this species of snake.
The Rinkhals is well-known for playing dead, as this is what it does when it feels threatened. It spits venom and hoods up just like a Cobra before it attacks.
Fanie urges people not to try and catch any snake by themselves; they should always call an expert to remove it.
