February 14 marks a dual celebration for Sew (70) and Kwelapathy (74) Ramdeen. The couple will not only celebrate Valentine’s Day, but also their 50th wedding anniversary.

With a glimmer in their eyes, they remark that it was love at first sight for both of them in 1967 when they first laid eyes on each other.

Mr Ramdeen explains that he spotted his beloved while she was visiting family in Estcourt. The young Mrs Ramdeen lived in Glencoe at the time. After that initial contact, plans were in motion to begin a relationship.

“We started writing letters – there were no phones at that time – and began our relationship in 1967,” recounts Mr Ramdeen.

It took the couple three years before they tied the knot on February 14, 1970.

“It was an easy process; we got to know each other’s family and thereafter we were married,” adds Mr Ramdeen.

Mrs Ramdeen says it was her husband’s good looks and kindness that attracted her to him. The couple made a home for themselves in Estcourt and had three children; two sons and a daughter.

When asked about their secret to a long-lasting relationship, they both agree that being together during good and bad times is key.

“We thank God for the years He has given us and keeping us together. We’ve had our ups and downs, but we’re always there for each other. We always remember how we fell in love and got married,” smiles Mr Ramdeen.
