Lion shot dead near Melmoth

However, it appears as if the Dundee lion is still on the loose..

The lion shot dead near Melmoth this week by Ezemvelo Wildlife rangers was most likely not the same feline that has been spotted in various locations around Dundee over the six weeks.

It was reported on Monday that a female lion was shot dead after ‘an after intensive special search operation in the area. which has been terrorising the community of KwaYanguye (Sanguye). Nomusa Dube-Ncube, MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, said in a statement that the lion had attacked Jabulani Biyela in KuNgqekwane around the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve.

He miraculously survived and spent three weeks at Ngwelezane Hospital recovering.

However, the lion that was picked up by a motion sensor camera on a farm near Dundee, following the killing of a calf, was a large male lion.

he lion’s footprints have been seen on other farms on the outskirts of the Municipal area and at least two other calves killed.
Despite an intensive search, trackers and professional hunters, who were also aided by an aerial search party, have been unable to trace the male lion.
