Reporters in the field witnessed long queues of residents not adhering to the prescribed one-metre social distance rule, and while some covered their faces with masks and scarves and wore gloves, others seemed unfazed by the coronavirus pandemic. In an attempt to prevent possible spread of Covid-19, Acting Mayor of AbaQulusi, Mncedisi Maphisa joined councillors and municipal officials on a campaign to sanitise residents’ hands and encourage them to adhere to social distancing.

Stores such as Shoprite, Boxer and Spar had their hands full with the long queues, while the Post Office had the longest queue, running from Church Street all the way down to Landdrost Street near the Information Bureau. Only 30 clients were allowed inside at a time. At the Post Office and the aforementioned supermarkets, residents were only allowed in after sanitising their hands.
