Motorists advised to avoid Dundee/ Hattingspruit road

Road barricaded as protest action flares up

Motorists travelling to Dundee or Glencoe from Dannhauser/ Newcastle are advised to use the N11 this morning.

This is as a result of protest action near Hattingspruit. Burning tyres and rocks are still blocking the road. The protest started last night.

Local Hattingspruit residents said that they understood that the protest was against what some called ‘the unfair hiring of workers’ at a nearby mine.

The protesters claimed that ‘outside people’ were hired at the expense of locals. However, this could not be confirmed.

Burning tyres block the main road through Hattingspruit this morning, July 21.

Community members took to the streets last night, barricading the roads with burning tyres and tree branches.

Motorists travelling to and from Dundee earlier this morning found that the area was still a no go zone.

This is a developing story and more details will be provided once these become available.
