A Volkswagen and a Jeep have been recovered following a robbery at a home in Nongoma on Monday. The robbery suspects attempted to hide out in the Fulathela area of Osizweni.
According to official sources, the Nongoma victims were held at gunpoint by a group of 12 armed suspects. A case has since been opened at SAPS Nongoma.
The suspects fled the scene in two stolen vehicles – a Volkswagen and a Jeep – along with cash, eight cell phones, a tablet and two laptops, and managed to evade police and escape the area.
After information about the suspects’ whereabouts was confirmed, a combined intelligence-driven sting operation was formed. The team comprised the Ithemba Tracing Team, Tracker, SA Community Crime Watch, the Newcastle K9 Unit, the Zululand Task Team, the Osizweni Visible Policing Unit, the Vehicle Crime Investigating Unit and various other police officials and crime fighters.
“Upon arrival in Fulathela, the suspects spotted the operational team and evaded them, dumping the vehicles and some belongings taken in the robbery,” explained a source from Ithemba Security.
Some members of the team attended to the scene and recovered the stolen items, while others began tracing the suspects. All members are thanked for their involvement.
