Criminal activity goes up in smoke as police confiscate booze and cigarettes

The male suspects have appeared at the Madadeni Magistrate's Court.

Four suspects have been arrested for contravening the Disaster Management Act of 2020 after they were caught transporting liquor.

Lizzy Arumugam of Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications said that during an intelligence driven operation from July 31 to August 2, task team members acted on tip offs to find the suspects.

“Osizweni Crime Prevention members followed a tip to the Manzana area and spotted a white Toyota, which they proceeded to search. They confiscated almost 20 bottles of beer and arrested three male suspects,” she confirmed.

On August 2, police officials arrested one suspect in the Blaauwbosch area (Vilakazi Stand) and confiscated 21 packs of Fumar Prejudica cigarettes and three packs of RG cigarettes.

“All the suspects were arrested and have appeared in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court.”

Arumugam estimated the value of the confiscated liquor and cigarettes was estimated to be R220 and R840 respectively.
