GALLERY: Jukskei clubhouse vandalised, SAPS and municipality respond

A case of business housebreaking is open and under investigation by SAPS.

In this week’s edition of the Newcastle Advertiser, we interview veteran jukskei player and coach, Daleen Roos.

She discusses the challenges and successes of the sport, the effects of lockdown, and how vandalism and uncertainty have caused delays in the restarting of league competition.

At some point during the national lockdown, the clubhouse at the Arbor Park Grounds was vandalised, with basins ripped off the walls, roof panels torn out and equipment stolen.

Speaking on behalf of Newcastle SAPS, Lizzy Arumugam from Corporate Communications confirmed a case of ‘business housebreaking’ had been opened. The case is under investigation but no arrests have been made yet.

She stated the Newcastle Municipality was responsible for ensuring the safety of sporting premises, although SAPS does conduct regular patrols in the area.

Municipal Head of Communications, Mlungisi Khumalo explained there was security at the grounds, but the damages occurred when very few staff were on hand due to the lockdown.

Khumalo said SAPS and the municipality had a good relationship, with police officials called in to assist with arrests, and security personnel conduct their own patrols on municipal-owned properties.

“We will increase our visibility, especially at recreational places,” he concluded.
