Parolee arrested for alleged rape in Ladysmith area

The 30-year-old attempted to run away, but he was later arrested in a nearby mountain in Matiwaneskop

Ladysmith KZN: A 30-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday afternoon (September 2) in Matiwaneskop after an eight-year-old girl was brutally raped while walking home alone from school.

Elandslaate police officers received a tip-off about the 30-year-old suspect, who was seen near the donga where the rape took place.

Ladysmith police spokesperson Captain Nyathi has applauded Elandslaagte Station Commander Captain Khanyi for his quick response with regards to this rape incident.

“Police received a tip-off about a man who was seen leaving the donga minutes after the incident happened. When police went to his home in Matiwaneskop, the 30-year-old attempted to run away, but he was later arrested in a nearby mountain in Matiwaneskop. The suspect now faces rape charges.”

The alleged rapist is a parolee who was recently released from prison.

He will be appearing in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (Friday, September 4).
