Residents in the Aloe Park area have been complaining about water shortages they have been experiencing for the past three days.

Cllr Abbas Warasally has commented that no water tankers have been sent out to the affected area.

“It has been three days that most portions of the Aloe Park area in Ladysmith have been without water. This is an ongoing problem for months now and the uThukela District Municipality Call Centre is failing to give sensible answers to residents. Two days ago, there was a major pipe burst in Ajantha Crescent, which was attended to. It is possible that after the repairs were completed, a valve was not opened, in turn leaving residents without water,” said Cllr Warasally.

uThukela communication manager Jabulani Mkhonza says the main reason the people of Acaciavale, as well as those who reside in Ezakheni, have been without water supply for days is because of the maintenance of the Ezakheni Water Treatment Works.

“The shutdown affected the new section of the plant, which translated to the plant having 50% capacity.

The shutdown was essential, as we were refurbishing the filters, circular clarifier and the backwash system.

“The process was started on Tuesday at 6am and was completed on Wednesday at 6am. We were using one pump on each stream and used the second pump to Abattoir Hill. Aasvoelkop Reservoir was building up slowly and the water was released later at 6pm. Thus, some areas, including Acaciavale and Ezakheni, have experienced low pressure while we are limping along with half the capacity of the plant.”

Aloe Park residents are still facing the challenge of dry taps.
