Ladysmith KZN: District mayor addresses water issues in Ezakheni

Cllr Mazibuko promised to return to the area to assess the progress

uThukela District Municipality Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko visited Ezakheni E-Section on Tuesday (March 9) to attend to complaints concerning low water pressure in the area.

Mayor Mazibuko said he would send a team from the Water Services Department to attend to this issue, and promised to return to the area to assess the progress being made.

Earlier on Tuesday, Cllr Mazibuko went for an oversight visit to the Ezakheni Water Treatment Works, where there is ongoing refurbishment taking place. He was accompanied by Ward Cllr Mchunu, Special Programmes Manager Mr Mkhize and officials from Umgeni Water.

The team received a briefing from Mpume Masinga (Umgeni Water) and Mr Ron Stewart from Rasp Consultants (trading as VIVA Technologies), who are undertaking the refurbishment at the plant. The team was then taken on a tour to see the progress at the plant.

The plant is currently sitting at 30% completion; they have installed brand new dosing pumps. In addition, there are two new scour valves in the segmentation tanks and they have also installed brand new backwash pumps.
The purifier bridge is now functional after not working for a long time.

The team said that to remove the sludge, the contractor needs to shut down, but that will be communicated with the affected communities in due course.
