ESTCOURT KZN: IFP leads election race as ballot counting continues

A source who is assisting with counting the ballot papers said that the process is nearing the end, with about 20 boxes left to tally

The morning after the much-anticipated 2021 municipal elections held on November 1, members of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) are claiming victory.

Shortly before midday today (November 2), the IFP was leading with over 48% of the votes, with the African National Congress trailing on just below 30%, this was according to data from the Independent Electoral Commission’s live results portal.

Delighted IFP member Nyanda Mchunu claimed that the IFP had secured 15 wards and was poised to take over the council.

A source who is assisting with counting the ballot papers said that the process is nearing the end, with about 20 boxes left to tally at 13.30.

While the results have yet to be verified by the IEC’s municipal electoral officer, Vusi Magubane, the source says that it is about “99.9% certain that the IFP will take over the local municipal council”.
