ESTCOURT KZN: School road needs ‘urgent attention’
On rainy days, the road is a nightmare
Teaching and learning is flourishing inside the fenced-off yard at Riverdale Primary School in Rensburgdrift, with learners introduced to new recycling and environmental methods, Girl Guides and Brownies fulfilling their duties, and young ambassadors for youth change.

However, outside the school is a different story. The school is located at the end of a gravel road. On dry days, the road is usable, although the bumpy drive will give you a good shake-up. On rainy days, however, the road is a nightmare, with vehicles becoming stuck in the mud, and learners and staff splattered with mud even before getting to school.
For many months, school staff have been trying to engage the correct authorities and come up with a plan to get to and from school safely, especially on rainy days. Last week, as school re-opened, the ground was saturated from the continuous rain, and this spelled disaster.
Vehicles became wedged in the deep holes that are filled with water and mud, and tensions ran high.
“We always encounter these problems during rainy days on our road to school/work. It’s high time that something was done; we are really tired of this situation, as it’s not healthy at all. We are sick and tired of this drama. This thing needs special attention,” said educator Deborah Gamede.
