Local police have been exceptionally busy over the last month, with a variety of serious crimes being reported almost daily.
Lizzy Arumugam, of the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications office, has compiled a list of the more serious crimes reported during the second half of the month.
They are as follows:
Newcastle SAPS was notified of a robbery that occurred on Scott Street around 12:30 on February 16.
“The complainant claimed that as he was leaving the post office after receiving his grant money, he was approached by a group of men he recognised, but did not know their names. One of the men then allegedly produced a knife and demanded he pay them for assisting him in getting a spot in the queue,” said Arumugam.
When the complainant refused to give them money, he was allegedly threatened with the knife again and robbed of R100.
SAPS responded to a business robbery that occurred on February 18 at a local business on Voortrekker Street.
“The complainant alleged that while he was alone in the shop, he was threatened with a firearm by an unknown male posing as a customer. The complainant was led to the back of the store and his hands and legs were taped together with cello tape,” she said.
Arumugam then further alleged that another unidentified male stood at the entrance, and robbed three customers of R33 000 in cash as they entered the shop.
“The shop was robbed of cash to the value of R62 799 in total, before the two suspects fled the scene.”
No suspects have been arrested as yet, and police investigation continues.
Police responded to another robbery later that same day, after a victim claimed he was robbed of his cellphone and wallet on Murchison Street.
“The complainant alleged that he was threatened with a knife by two unknown males. He was robbed of his belongings to the value of R6 150 in total,” said Arumugam.
Following that, police responded to a house burglary in Barry Hertzog Park.
“The complainant noticed the window had been broken and entry had been gained. A bicycle, a laptop, and a camera were all stolen.”
The police were called, and after an investigation, one suspect was apprehended and the items were recovered.
Police were then summoned to attend a theft on Allen Street, after a man noticed his wallet was stolen from his pocket while in the CBD.
Another case of robbery was reported shortly afterward, after a man was assaulted and robbed of his cellphone and money on Voortrekker Street.
All cases remain subject to police investigations.
Stock theft recoveries:
- Suspect arrested for being in possession of stolen cattle
The Amajuba Anti Stock Theft Unit conducted a sting operation on February 13 in the Masondeza area of Madadeni.
“One suspect was apprehended for allegedly possessing a stolen cow and calf, worth around R16 000,” said Arumugam.
The recovered stock was turned over to the Utrecht pound for safekeeping. Further police investigations are ongoing.
- Seven stolen cattle were recovered in Dicks Halt
The Amajuba Anti Stock Theft Unit recovered seven cattle in Dicks Halt on February 18, which were reported stolen in Madadeni.
The cattle are valued at approximately R57 000, and have since been returned to their rightful owner.
Police investigations are ongoing.
