Gold medal for local swimming ‘master’ –
Nothando Msomi (25) earned seven medals at the South African Masters Swimming (SAMS) National Championships in Cape Town during March. She described competing at the event as ‘the highlight of her swimming journey thus far’.
Nothando trains in the pool four times a week on average. She is based in Newcastle and is part of a Durban Masters club, which means she has to travel frequently to attend galas in the province.
At first, [swimming] may seem like a critical skill, especially for adults, but once you’ve gotten the basics, it’s a beautiful walk in the park.
Asked how she would motivate another person to begin swimming, Nothando said that besides being water-safe, swimming helps with physical and mental health.
Swimming is known to release endorphins, a hormone in the brain that simply makes a person feel good. Nothando added that in general, swimming is a great workout for the body and for a person’s wellbeing.
