Northern Natal racers qualify for national dirt oval event

Three Northern Natal racers will take on national competition after qualifying at the Full Throttle event in Newcastle.

Two Northern Natal Motorsport (NNM) racers will compete in the WOMZA (World of Motorsport ZA) Dirt Oval Nationals which takes place at the Bloem Oval Raceway in the Free State on August 28 and 29.

Wikkie Bezuidenhout who came first in the 1600 Stock category at the ‘Full Throttle’ August race (a national qualifier hosted by NNM in Newcastle on August 8) will compete in that category in the WOMZA nationals, while Hendrik van der Merwe who came third in the 1660s, has qualified to compete in that category.

Eugene Reynecke from Ladysmith, who came first in both the 2.1 Modifieds and the Hotrods categories in the qualifier, has also qualified to compete in the nationals.

Razia Cassim, who spoke on behalf of NNM, thanked all the drives who competed in ‘Full Throttle’.

“To every single competitor who brought their car, their passion, their nerves, their determination and their fighting spirit onto the track, thank you!” she said. “What made the event even more special is how far some of you travelled to come race with us.”

According to Cassim, the race on August 8 drew motorsports enthusiasts not only from Newcastle, but from Ladysmith, Kroonstad and Middelburg as well.

“Whether they travelled a few kilometres or made a long journey to get here, we appreciate every kilometre our supporters travelled to be part of Northern Natal Motorsport. They are the reason the engines fire up, the crowds cheered and the oval came alive,” she added.

The results for ‘Full Throttle’ are as follows:

  • In the Development Class, Andries Nieuwoudt came first, with Jacques van Schalkwyk in second place and Steyn Vermaas in third.
  • In the 1600 Stock, Wikie Bezuidenhout came first, with Jan Delport in second place and Anton van Rooyen Jr in third.
  • In the 1660s, Willie Swart came first with Stephan van der Merwe in second place and Hendrik van der Merwe in third.
  • In the 2.1 Modified, Eugene Reynecke came first, with Cedric Stowe in second place and Wilmien Becker in third.
  • In the Hotrods, Eugene Reynecke came first, with Cedric Stowe in second place and Marthinus van Rooyen in third.
  • In the Tin Tops, Tiaan Buys came first, with Boet Buys in second place and Jan Delport in third.

Drivers thanked for their efforts

“Congratulations to all our podium finishers,” said Cassim. “…and to every competitor who didn’t make the podium, keep going. Racing isn’t always about the trophy. It’s about the battles, the lessons, the improvements and coming back stronger next time.”

“To our staff, marshals, officials, emergency services, towing services, volunteers and everyone working behind the scenes, thank you,” she concluded. “You give up your time, stand in the cold, work long hours and make sure that our drivers, spectators and everyone attending can enjoy their day safely. Your contribution does not go unnoticed. Northern Natal Motorsport would not be what it is without you.”

Cassim promised another exciting race on September 5, promising that, “September’s event is going to make a little bit of motorsport history with spinners and oval track racers coming together for something that has never been done before at any raceway.”

“This is one you do not want to miss,” she said.
