St Dominics congratulates its ‘Superheroes’ –

The Curro Arts Superheroes (CAS) adjudication took place at St Dominics Newcastle on May 20 and 21. CAS, according to the Head of Culture for High School, Pragashini Dhewlall, is open to all learners from Grade 8 to 12 in the high school.

CAS covers a range of items in two categories,” she explained.

In the Submission category, learners can choose to participate in the following:

• Write it – covers the writing of short stories, essays, poems and monologues
• Shoot it – the photography category
• Post it – covering all social media items like vlogging, Instagram, etc.
• Code it – which has to do with gaming design
• Stage it – covering the design of costumes, hair and makeup, and set design of a prescribed play
• Film it – covering the filming of narratives and short films, etc.

In the Performance category, learners may choose to participate in the following in any of three languages offered at the school:

• Act it – including performances of poems, monologues, scenes, etc.
• Sing it – including the singing of duets, solos, etc.
• Play it – offering the playing of various musical instruments
• Make it – covering all aspects of Art, Design and Technology
• Read it – both prepared and unprepared reading
• Move it – covering all aspects of dance and movement.

Learners enter items as early as February. The Submission items are sent through to the Curro Create Team in April, and the Performance items are judged on site at our school,” said Dhewlall.

This year, she added, despite the cold and having to give up a Saturday, St Dominics Newcastle had 100% attendance on both days. She called this ‘an amazing achievement’ and thanked every participating learner.

Hard work pays off

Dhewlall explained that all items are adjudicated by experts in their respective fields. Learners receive detailed feedback and certificates according to their standard of work.

In keeping with this, Curro organises a Kryptonite National Concert, where the best performances are chosen and showcased nationally.

This year, we achieved a record-breaking seven Kryptonite awards… A total of 151 learners participated this year and our total number of entries this year was an astounding 263 items.”
