Mandela Day magic at Sifisosethu Drycott Crèche

It was indeed a special day for the learners and educators

The young learners at Sifisosethu Drycott Crèche were probably unaware of the auspicious nature that July 18 holds for the world.

Known as Mandela Day, it is the birthdate of former South African president and global icon Nelson Mandela.

Annually, people around the world give 67 minutes (or more) of their time to do good in the name of Madiba. This was also the case at the crèche on Monday (July 18).

Educators and learners waited patiently for the team from KFC to arrive and when they did, everyone was seated outside in the sun, ready to welcome them.

Phindile Zikalala from KFC explained that the team was there to serve lunch to the children, as well as donate plates and bowls.

There was one more goodwill gesture as well…

This was a cheque for R105,000 for Sifisosethu Drycott Crèche.

The money is thanks to the generosity of KFC customers in donating R2 to the Add Hope campaign.

Mrs Mabaso from the crèche said this donation was most welcome for the 112 learners, as well as their families.

“This will make a huge difference in our community. We will be using the money to buy food supplies for the feeding scheme. Many of the children who attend schools here are from homes where their parents are unemployed or they stay with grandparents who live off a small pension,” said Mrs Mabaso.

The children gratefully accepted the lunch, which was served to them with a smile from the KFC team.
