Sensei Johan La Grange, JKA 6th Dan and Chief Instructor and Technical Director of the South Africa Japan Karate Association (SA JKA), paid a visit to the Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal Japan Karate Association (NKZN JKA).

On the Friday night, Sensei La Grange presented a referee course, which was well attended by brown and black belt karateka from the NKZN JKA region.

According to La Grange, “truthfulness, impartiality, discernment, confidence, and a solid foundation of the rules and regulations applicable to judging JKA competitions at both the Provincial and National levels are required for good judging.”

“A judge should not only know all 26 JKA katas,” La Grange Sensei explained, “but he or she should also adhere to the three essential points of kata: strength / weakness of power, whether the technique should be fast or slow, and of course, extension and contraction of the body and knowing where and how these should be applied within each kata respectively.”
