Ladysmith: EFF national shutdown off to a slow start

A strong security force presence was seen in town

Taxis are running as normal this morning (March 20), with a handful of EFF protesters marching through town.

They marched from their offices (opposite Game) down Lyell Street, making a detour into the Plaza shopping complex and the OK shopping mall complex.

They then proceeded up Alexander Street, before heading back down Murchison Street.

Police escorted the marchers, with Public Safety briefly closing the roads to allow the marchers to proceed.

They marched past the Town Hall and police station, before dispersing peacefully.

Last night, there were reports of groups about the same size marching through town, including a small protest near the police station. All protests have been peaceful so far.

We have also received reports that protesters are active near the Bergville Tolls.

We will update you when we know more.
