AbaQulusi Local Municipality held a swearing-in ceremony of four new councillors at the speaker’s office on Tuesday last week.
The four new councillors are Cllr SP Ndaba, Cllr T Kunene, and party representative (PR) councillors S Khuzwayo and SZ Mdluli. Cllr Ndaba of Ward 13 was elected as a ward councillor late last year, following the death of the IFP’s Cllr Mbatha. Cllr Kunene of Ward 12 was elected last month as a ward councillor after the passing of ANC Cllr Mdlalose. PR Cllrs S Khuzwayo and SZ Mdluli are from the EFF. They replace PR Cllrs BP Nhlengethwa and RZ Nzuza, who resigned from their seats as EFF PR councillors to take up IFP membership.
During the proceedings, the new councillors were given guidelines on being a good councillor and all the laws that are relevant. This included the Codes of Conduct.
Speaker Cllr Michael Khumalo and Municipal Manager Mr Zweli Dhlamini further advised that, as they are now councillors, they do not represent just their political parties, but the community at large. This means that their services to the community should not be limited to their political party members, but should extend to all residents of AbaQulusi, regardless of their political standing.
