Mashampula living his dream through Maskandi music
“Performing in Cape Town was an experience of a lifetime! What surprised me most is that people knew the lyrics to my songs and sang along.''
Lungelo Mathe’s desire to dominate the world of maskandi music is fast becoming a reality. He is popularly known as ‘Mashampula’ in the music industry.
Mashampula, who lives in Nongoma under the Zululand District, is flying high at the moment. He is booked and busy, and recently performed on stage in Cape Town in front of a bigger audience than ever before. He says that, “Performing in Cape Town was an experience of a lifetime! What surprised me most is that people knew the lyrics to my songs and sang along. I shared the stage with artists like Ndoni, Gqizile, Mjolisi and Saliwa, who were in this industry before me. That was definitely the highlight of my year.”
Mashampula thanks the Vryheid Herald for publishing an article about him earlier this year, which he says opened a lot of doors for him in the maskandi world. He also thanks his fans for their continuous support; Navigator for organising the Bhinca Day event in Cape Town; and Zakhele Mahaye, who believed in his talent when he did not. He concluded by saying, “Artists need to believe and push their craft on their own at first. Be yourself, but have respect for other people.”
He is ‘Mashampula Qwabe’ on Facebook and ‘Mashampula’ on TikTok, and is set to release a new album in November.
