AbaQulusi holds second Mayoral Cup since Covid
“The Mayoral Cup is basically about them showing what they can do and then be selected to play in the district; and from there to the SALGA Games.''

The AbaQulusi Mayoral Cup took place on Sunday at the Cecil Emmet sports ground.
Participants and supporters converged on the sports field as the heated games kicked off. There was soccer and netball, as well as indoor sporting codes that were held inside the Cecil Emmet Hall.
The chairperson of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the municipality, Mr Sikhakhane, gave a short briefing on the purpose of the event. He said, “This is the second Mayoral Cup in this municipality after the Covid-19 pandemic, and this year it’s bigger and better. We are here today to support as well as encourage young people to re-focus on things that are positive in their lives, revive their passion for sport, and not dwell on negative things like substance abuse. This is also an opportunity for the players to get selected to play in different leagues, as well as earn money from their skills. We now have sportsmen who make a living through playing sport.”
Mayor Khehla Mkhwanazi mentioned that he wants to develop the talents and skills of young people in AbaQulusi through sport. “The Mayoral Cup is basically about them showing what they can do and then be selected to play in the district; and from there to the SALGA Games. Players are taken from different wards to form clusters that represent them.” He urged parents to support their children if they show interest in any type of sport.
The winners went home with prizes like medals, certificates and trophies.
