EFF vies to unseat IFP at Newcastle Municipality

Newcastle has again been a political talking point as the EFF makes clear its intention to unseat the IFP in the municipality.

“We must beat the IFP, we must beat it in Newcastle!”

Those are the words uttered by EFF Commander in Chief, Julius Malema, in his address at the KZN Provincial ‘Ground Forces’ gathering in Pietermaritzburg on December 3.

In a video circulating on social media, Malema can be heard speaking on a possible alliance between the EFF, ANC and Team Sugar (TSSA) in Newcastle.

“The EFF should be the government in Newcastle. I don’t know what Mongezi (EFF KZN Chairperson) did because Team Sugar is EFF. Every vote for Team Sugar is an EFF vote which was stolen from us,” Malema said.

“But because we are fighting with the IFP, we are prepared to make Team Sugar the mayor of Newcastle, so that we remove the IFP before the elections.”

Malema then gave Deputy President Floyd Shivambu the mandate to go and ‘talk to TSSA and the ANC.’

“Say, we don’t work together but come here, there is the IFP and we have to deal with it,” he says to the laughter of the approving audience.

“We can’t say we’re an alternative when we are scared of the IFP, when we are scared of the ANC, we must put them together and defeat them, “he stated.

In its response, IFP spokesperson, Mkhuleko Hlengwa MP, said the party had been inundated with media enquiries in reaction to Malema’s comments at ‘a rent-a-crowd event held in Pietermaritzburg this past weekend.’

“As a general rule asiwuphenduli umsangano (we don’t respond to madness).”
