Jeanette van Dyk leaves behind her legacy of love
After 28 years of unwavering service to her community, Jeanette van Dyk, the principal and founder of Happy Children Pre-Primary School, is retiring, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, love, and an indelible mark on countless young lives.
Known for her strength, compassion, and resilience, Jeanette’s journey has been one of profound faith and a lifelong commitment to shaping the future of children.
Jeanette’s story began in Vereeniging, where she grew up as one of five children in a household where her mother was bedridden due to illness.
From a young age, Jeanette took on caregiving duties, nurturing her siblings and learning the importance of selflessness and compassion.
These early experiences would later lay the foundation for her calling as an educator and community leader.
Jeanette’s vision for Happy Children Pre-Primary School came to her as an inspired message from God. Driven by this divine calling, she identified the perfect location for the school and convinced the property’s then-residents to rent it to her.
In 1996, Jeanette’s dream became a reality, and Happy Children Pre-Primary School opened its doors.
Building the school was no small task, and Jeanette faced many challenges. Securing government support was difficult, and she often had to write off unpaid school fees.
Yet, her unwavering focus was always on the children. She constantly reminded herself and others, “It’s not the children’s fault.”
Jeanette’s dedication went beyond academics; she worked tirelessly to bridge language gaps, instil respect, and nurture the characters of each child under the guidance of her faith.
Her compassion extended to every child, regardless of their background or circumstances.
Jeanette often saw potential where others might see limitations. One story tells of a young girl with dwarfism who lacked confidence due to her health challenges.
With Jeanette’s encouragement and the support of her teachers and peers, the girl blossomed and even took on the lead role in a school concert.
In another instance, Jeanette helped a child with an amputated arm believe that she could achieve anything. These stories exemplify
Jeanette’s extraordinary ability to inspire and uplift her students.
Ensuring the safety of her students was another challenge Jeanette met head-on. She worked closely with local taxi associations to create a reliable and safe transport system for the children.
In addition, she designed and hand-sewed uniforms in different colours for each day of the week, complete with the school emblem and emergency contact numbers, ensuring children could be identified and assisted if needed.
Jeanette’s leadership went beyond the classroom as she built a team of 14-16 staff members, including qualified teachers, Zulu-speaking helpers, cleaners, and a secretary.
Together, they provided a nurturing and structured environment where the children thrived. Her impact was so profound that several of her former students returned to Happy Children as qualified educators to complete their community service years.
At home, Jeanette balanced her professional duties with being a loving wife and mother to three children. Despite her demanding schedule, she made sure her family always enjoyed home-cooked meals, even if they were served late into the evening.
Visiting Happy Children Pre-Primary School was always a joy. The smiles on the children’s faces were a testament to the love and warmth they experienced there.
But it wasn’t just the children who made the school special; it was the teachers who created an environment filled with joy, pride, and unwavering care.
This school would not have been the incredible place it was without Jeanette van Dyk, the proud and hardworking principal who kept the vision alive, no matter the obstacles.
For 28 years, Jeanette has shaped the lives of young children, helping them realise their potential and guiding them toward becoming remarkable individuals.
The school, with its smiling faces, colourful classrooms, Christmas concerts, and graduation celebrations, will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of being part of its community.
As Jeanette enters retirement, her family – husband, children, and grandchildren – have expressed their deep pride and gratitude for the legacy she leaves behind.
They trust that she will find peace and rest in her well-deserved twilight years.
The van Dyk family also extends their heartfelt thanks to the teachers, staff, and community members who have walked alongside Jeanette throughout this incredible journey.
The legacy of Happy Children Pre-Primary School is a true reflection of Jeanette’s unshakable dedication to education, her love for her community, and the lives she has touched through her work.
Jeanette van Dyk will forever be remembered as a pillar of strength, love, and inspiration in the hearts of all who knew her.
