Lizzy Arumugam of the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Department said officers responded to an emergency call at a house in Magnolia Street in Arbor Park.
Upon arrival, they found a 40-year-old man inside the house bleeding from a neck wound.
“He was immediately transported to Madadeni Provincial Hospital for urgent medical treatment,” said Arumugam.
Arumugam further confirmed that the suspect was the victim’s wife who had allegedly stabbed her husband during a heated argument.
The exact motive for the stabbing will remain subjective until further investigation.
However, it had been confirmed that both the suspect and the victim were highly intoxicated and that domestic violence played a role in the altercation.
The suspect made her first court appearance on May 26, where she was denied bail and she remanded back into police custody. She will reappear in court on June 2 to allow for the services of an Afrikaans interpreter.
The victim is currently still in hospital and is unable to speak or respond to questions.
