IFP wins Ward 12 by-election in Dannhauser

The IFP should now govern through a coalition

The IFP’s Cindy Maphisa won yesterday’s crucial Ward 12 by-election in Dannhauser to secure the party’s control of the municipality.

The IFP won 1166 votes, taking 52% of the vote, and the ANC 759 or 34%. The EFF received 157 votes.

The ANC brought in former President Zuma to address a rally in the area on Sunday hoping to take the ward.

Dannhauser municipality has 25 seats and it was left hung after the November 2021 local government elections.

The ANC had nine seats; the IFP now has nine seats; the EFF, a voting (not coalition) partner of the ANC, has three; while the DA, Abantu Batho Congress (ABC), Team Sugar SA (IFP coalition partner) and the Community Freedom Party (CFP) each have one seat.

The vacant position came about when the independent councillor of ward 12 resigned late last year.

The IFP will have a slender majority thanks to its coalition partner.
