IFP leads Nquthu election race with 17 seats as MKP makes strong showing
The Inkatha Freedom Party has emerged as the biggest party in Nquthu, securing 17 of the 39 council seats, while the MK Party takes 11 in the preliminary results.
The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has taken the lead in Nquthu’s 2026 local government elections, securing 17 of the municipality’s 39 council seats, according to the latest results displayed.
The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) made a strong showing, claiming 11 seats, while the African National Congress (ANC) secured eight.
The results, which were still marked as not final, showed the South African Communist Party (SACP), Abantu Bezweletu Congress Democracy and the Democratic Alliance (DA) each securing one seat.
IFP retains lead as political landscape shifts
The IFP’s 17 seats represent a slight decline from the 19 it secured in the 2021 local government elections.
The ANC also experienced a decline, dropping from 14 seats in 2021 to eight in the latest results.
The MKP, which had no seats listed in the 2021 comparison, emerged as the second-largest party with 11 seats.
With 39 council seats in total, an outright majority requires 20 seats. The IFP therefore falls three seats short of that threshold, meaning cooperation with other parties would be necessary to secure a majority if the preliminary allocation remains unchanged.
