Dannhauser residents told that there is yet hope for the ongoing water crisis
The District Municipality is to spend millions on upgrading the water infrastructure in mainly rural areas.
Dannhauser and Durnacol residents may finally see some relief of their ongoing water woes, with Amajuba Mayor uMntwana Ndabuko Zulu revealing multi-million rand projects.
Constant water outages have left many in the Dannhauser area high and dry for weeks, with many relying on the clemency of those who donate tankers and bottled water.
“As the year 2024 unfolds, we have probable projects that will guarantee that the challenges and shortfalls regarding the provision of water are addressed,” Mayor Zulu said in his New Year address.
“In the past few months, our focus has been on addressing some of the key areas, like replacing a faulty transformer at Thukela Water Services and introducing an aggressive leak detection and repair intervention aimed at reducing water loss and shortages.
“This is in addition to the construction of 719 VIP in-fills for phase 1. This project will directly benefit over 3000 people. Phases 2 and 3 will begin construction in January 2024. Phase two will see the construction of 792 units, while phase 3 construction projects are expected to deliver 972 units.”
Construction of 70km of pipelines for the Hilltop Settlements water supply scheme for wards 3, 7 and 12 in the Dannhauser area has commenced, benefiting over 6000 people. The municipality has successfully awarded the multi-million rand project for the emergency water supply to Ramaphosa, Hilltop and Skombaren, and construction will begin this month.
The scope work for this project consists of a 17.9km pipeline from Durnacol to Hilltop reservoirs, the construction of a 5ML (mega-litre) reservoir at Durnacol, and a 200kl brake pressure tank.
The project will further provide potable water to over 10,000 households.
“While progress has indeed been made, issues of illegal connections, infrastructure theft and vandalism continue to hinder our district’s advancement.
“Such destructive conduct immensely contributes to the water supply shortages we continue to experience in the district.”
