Dundee High School hosts inauguration of new Umzinyathi learners’ council

The spotlight was on the need for discipline at all schools in the Umzinyathi area, where the district offices is in charge of 507 schools in the district.

Dundee High School hosted the 2024 Umzinyathi Inauguration of Representatives Council of Learners on Thursday, February 29, where students from Umzinyathi schools were selected to represent Umzinyathi District in the RCL Representatives Council of Students.
The group of around 200 was welcomed by the directors of the Umzinyathi District Education Department, where last year’s students’ committee representative welcomed the newly-elected committee of 2024.
MTP Mangane, of the Education Department, congratulated last year’s student committee on their good performance in leadership throughout the year and the skills they achieved as a committee.
“There was good motivation from the students who represented the RCL in 2023 and we wish the new 2024 committee all the best in the future,” said Mangane.

Outgoing chairperson Amahle Dludla congratulated her team’s committee on their hard work and wished the new committee all the best for 2024.
She symbolically passed the Umzinyathi drum of leadership to new chairperson Aphiwe Khanyile and his new committee.
The learners’ pledge was conducted by Sibusiswe Malembe (district secretary of the RCL) while the principal and teachers’ pledge was done by NC Shezi.
In his presentation, guest of honour W Keswa (director of the Umzinyathi Education Department) congratulated all the students on being selected for the RCL committees from all districts of Umzinyathi.

He said that the pass rate for 2023 for the matrics was 86.6%, which was an improvement compared to other years, and that Umzinyathi District came seventh in the province compared to other years. In 2016, it was rated 12th in KZN.
He added that there were concerns in the Education Department about discipline, where illegal activities occur such as alcohol, drugs, harassment and sexual assault.
In his closing speech, he wished them all the best for the future and thanked those who sponsored the gathering, which was a great success.
