SAPS in Umzinyathi step up efforts to rid the district of illegal firearms

District Commissioner Major General Francis Slambert applauded all the members involved in sweeping the streets of Umzinyathi District. She said: "We shall not rest until all these firearms are taken from the wrong hands."

Police efforts to rid the district of illegal weapons continue to reap rewards, with at least two firearms and ammunition seized during recent raids.
In the first incident, members of the Msinga Vispol Unit, accompanied by detectives, followed up on information about a suspect linked to a recent murder.

They raided a residence and found a 32-year-old man with an unlicensed AK-47 rifle. He was arrested.
In another incident on Friday, an intelligence-driven operation was conducted at Kunene Farm after the Umzinyathi District Task Team swiftly responded to information received about someone who was allegedly in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The tip-off was that the said firearm was about to be moved to Wasbank.
Upon arrival at the suspect’s residence, the 32-year-old was found to be in possession of an unlicensed double-barrel shotgun.

He was arrested and detained at Dundee police station.
