Biggarsberg Athletic Club, Dundee, members ready themselves for the ultimate human race

Nine brave locals will tackle the uprun from Durban to Pietermaritzburg this Sunday.

Nine members of Biggarsberg Athletics Club (BBAC) will tackle the 97th Comrades Marathon on Sunday, June 9, which will be the 49th up-run.
The iconic race starts at the Durban City Hall at 05:30 and ends 12 hours later at the HollywoodBets Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg, covering a distance of 85.91km.
Known as ‘The Ultimate Human Race’, Comrades is the world’s oldest and largest ultra-marathon with over 20,500 runners entered this year.

Early Sunday morning, BBAC members gathered at the Dundee Boulevard Centre for their traditional 4km run through town, a week before the big race, and then had a protein-fuelled breakfast at Wimpy.
Siyabonga Ngobese of BBAC said he was pleased that the members had shown so much discipline with their training.
“Only four members managed to report for the run, but we know how busy life is,” he said.

The four included local running legend, Dundee detective Antony Nkabinde, who will be running his 29th Comrades.
He already has 15 silver medals and two bronze medals on his wall, as well as many Bill Rowan medals.
The others are Sanele Nxumalo, who is going for his 12th Comrades; Clifford Mkhonza (second Comrades); and Pat Sibisi, who is heading into his fifth ultimate challenge.
Other BBAC members who have not entered the Comrades Marathon gladly joined their four brave counterparts for the morning fun-run in the build-up to June 9.
