Local councillor ratchets up probe into much-maligned Dundee Hospital

For many years now, Dundee Hospital has been dubbed 'hospital of horrors' by those who have claimed to have experienced poor or no treatment at the facility.

For years now, Dundee Hospital has been the source of many complaints and even ridicule from those seeking medical attention.
Many of the complaints published in the Courier have centred around alleged tardy behaviour by staff, poor treatment and unhygienic conditions.
Last year, a combination of a wrong diagnosis and poor treatment was blamed for the death of a disabled Dundee man which the Courier investigated, prompting Dr Imraan Keeka of the KZN Legislature to call for an urgent investigation into the Dundee Hospital by the KZN Health MEC.

The complaints have been largely ignored by the Hospital with management insisting on speaking directly to the complainants rather than issuing public statements. Most complainants have rejected this modus operandi.
Taking up the mantle on behalf of all those who believe they have suffered mistreatment at the hands of Dundee Hospital, local councillor, Naresh Gopie, has urged those who have encountered such experiences to contact him.

“Dundee Hospital has recently become the focus of widespread dissatisfaction within the community, primarily due to reports of rude and disrespectful behaviour from its staff, including daily cleaners. This troubling trend raises serious concerns about the hospital’s culture and impact on patient care and community trust,” Cllr Gopie said.

“Many community members have expressed their disappointment, questioning whether the root cause of this behaviour is ignorance, inadequate training, or a deeper issue of disregard and disrespect towards the very people the hospital is meant to serve. As a first responder institution, Dundee Hospital is expected to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and compassion, yet these reports suggest a significant shortfall in meeting those expectations.

“As the community grapples with these issues, there is a growing call for accountability and improvement. I invite residents to share their firsthand experiences with Dundee Hospital, aiming to gather comprehensive feedback and push for necessary changes. The goal is to ensure that all individuals receive the respect and care they deserve, restoring confidence in this vital community resource.”
