Acting mayor takes ‘hot seat’ at Umzinyathi council
Mayor Mchunu takes over a municipality thats been in the news for all the wrong reasons...
Umzinyathi District Municipality has officially appointed Cllr Thembisile Mchunu as its acting mayor, following the resignation of former Mayor Ngubane last week. The appointment was confirmed at a special council meeting in the Umzinyathi council chambers.
Mchunu takes the chain of office of a municipality wracked by a string of poor auditor-general reports, poor water service delivery and claims of nepotism, among other allegations.
Hopes are high that Mchunu – who was warmly received by fellow councillors and brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as deputy mayor for nearly two full terms – will make a positive difference and lead the municipality through this transitional period.
In her address to council, Acting Mayor Mchunu expressed her readiness to embrace the challenges and responsibilities of her new position.
She pledged to serve the community of Umzinyathi with dignity and integrity, underscoring her commitment to improve the municipality’s standing.
“I am up to the task,” she declared, reinforcing her dedication to public service and driving positive change for the people of Umzinyathi.
In his response, the DA’s Sibusiso Tau paid tribute to former Mayor Ngubane, saying that ‘under his leadership, Umzinyathi had grown’.
“Your efforts have laid a solid foundation for future developments.
“Your contributions to our municipality will not be forgotten and we are confident that you will continue to make a positive impact wherever your journey leads.”
Tau welcomed Acting Mayor Mnchunu, confirming his party’s confidence in her leadership abilities.
“We are certain she will carry out the responsibilities of this office with integrity, diligence and a steadfast commitment to the people of Umzinyathi.
“The DA stands ready to support you, Cllr TH Mnchunu, in your new role. We are committed to working alongside you to ensure that service delivery remains at the forefront of our efforts and that the needs and well-being of the people we serve are prioritised above all else.”
