Motorists disregard R602 road closure

A sinkhole started appearing on Thursday afternoon forcing the traffic authorities to direct motorists to alternate routes.

Motorists are continuing to ignore the closure of the R602, Glencoe to Wasbank, despite barrels and danger tape being put up near the turn-off to Sithembile.

Authorities closed the road on Thursday, April 10, after the surface started collapsing about 4km from Glencoe. However, many vehicles were seen dodging around the barrels. It is thought a lack of maintenance and the heavy summer rains have contributed to the road cracking.

Motorists are urged to use the alternative route via ‘One Tree Hill’ just past Sunset Rest, which is the R68 to Dundee.
