Peacevale residents in Dundee fed up with illegal dumping that adds to their flooding woes
Many Peacevale feel that they are being neglected with rutted roads, overgrown plots and poor storm water drainage the norm.
The recent storm that struck the area – flooding homes and causing walls to tumble down – has brought into sharp focus the issue of dumping.
Residents of Nightingale Drive and surrounding communities in Peacevale say uncontrolled dumping is exacerbating their plight. A vacant plot at the bottom of Nightingale Drive has become a focal point for several community concerns.
The plot, which has been left unattended, is not only an eyesore but has contributed to blocked water drainage systems, making it difficult to manage water flow during heavy storms. This situation worsens during heavy rainstorms that cause widespread flooding and property damage. The impact of these storms has been severe. Inayet Gopie, a concerned resident of Nightingale Drive, said this has caused walls to collapse and homes to flood.
“This has been a persistent problem. Every time it rains heavily, we face the same damage. It’s getting worse and something needs to be done,” Gopie said.
But residents are worried about more than weather-related challenges. They also face serious infrastructure problems, including road surfaces riddled with potholes and a lack of street lighting, which contributes to safety concerns.
The absence of adequate lighting, particularly at night, makes the area more vulnerable to criminal activity.
“The long grass on vacant plots is being used as cover for criminals. These areas are not only dangerous but are being turned into hideouts for people who commit crimes and store stolen goods,” added Gopie.
The lack of proper service delivery in the area is a significant concern, as local residents feel abandoned by authorities who have not addressed these ongoing issues. Open, neglected pieces of land are being misused and the risk of criminal activities is growing.
Additionally, the challenges faced by residents are not isolated to Nightingale Drive. Other roads and residential areas in Peacevale are suffering under similar issues – from lack of proper drainage systems to unsafe, poorly maintained roads.
“We need urgent action. The community has been struggling with these problems for far too long,” Gopie concluded.
The residents of Nightingale Drive and Peacevale are calling for increased attention from local authorities to address these critical issues, including proper drainage systems, improved road infrastructure, enhanced street lighting and effective waste management. They hope that with greater focus and action, they can restore safety and dignity to their neighbourhoods.
