Endumeni residents take to fixing potholes themselves

Potholes still plaguing Endumeni roads despite Mayor’s promises.

While Endumeni Municipality has, in some way, kept the promise made by Mayor Andrew Mkhize in his maiden speech after he took office in January, there is still a lot to do. That’s the opinion of two residents—one in Dundee and the other in Glencoe—who last week both suffered tyre damage after their vehicles hit potholes ‘hidden’ by rainwater.
The Dundee motorist hit one of the numerous holes that golfers have gotten used to dodging in Tandy Street, near the intersection with Hardy Street.
The Glencoe motorist hit a hole in Glencoe.

Claims can be made to the municipality for reparation by writing a letter of demand that includes photographic evidence of the damage and the pothole and quotes for the repairs. That’s the opinion of Willie Steenberg of the Endumeni Residents Association.
“We urge motorists to follow this route. If there are enough, we can even institute a class action against the municipality, as it is their mandate to provide safe roads to residents.”

Meanwhile, some business people and residents are taking matters into their own hands. Shan Deena was recently contracted to fill in several huge holes in Wilson Street, which have disrupted customers doing business in the area.
That section of road is under pressure from coal trucks that use it to reach the washing plant at Coalfields.

In the Mpati area, Hennie Roos has also taken up the shovel to fill in holes over the past few months. To date, he has filled 86 potholes, with grateful residents handing him donations as they say that despite reporting the poor roads, they have never received any feedback from the municipality.
Roos said he is prepared to move into other areas to fix potholes and would appreciate donations for material, transport and for his workers only. He can be contacted on 082 453 0874. In Strathmore Park, George Groenewald has embarked on a similar ‘anti-pothole drive’.
