Endumeni Municipality starts road upgrade programme amid controversy

Despite welcoming the much-needed work, residents are asking why other pothole-ridden roads are being ignored.

Rehabilitation work on Bulwer Street, a project launched last year under former Mayor Siyabonga Ndlovu, is officially underway.
Contractors Nethile Projects and Elshadi Civils are carrying out the R1-million project, which has temporarily closed the route.
While some have welcomed the upgrade, residents have criticised it and are questioning the municipality’s road maintenance priorities.

The little-used Dean Mohammed Road has also seen improvements, leaving locals puzzled as to why heavily trafficked streets like McKenzie, riddled with potholes, remain untouched.
Residents of Peacevale have told the Courier that their roads are ‘falling apart’, with Flamingo Drive described as virtually undrivable.

Municipal officials previously stated that the current projects were approved and budgeted for in the last financial cycle. Further road upgrades, they say, will only be considered once the new budget is passed at the end of this month.
