Two men arrested after being found with unlicensed firearms
The operation is part of the vow by the SAPS in the Umzinyathi to root out illegal weapons in the district.
Swift action by the Kranskop Crime Prevention Unit led to the arrest on Monday, May 19, of two suspects following the recovery of two unlicensed firearms and ammunition on the Kranskop main road.
Umzinyathi SAPS spokesperson, Constable Siyabonga Nkwanayana, said alert members of the Crime Prevention Unit were conducting patrols when they noticed two men travelling in what they said was ‘a suspicious vehicle.’
“Officers stopped the vehicle and conducted a search during which both men, aged 29 and 34, were found in possession of unlicensed pistols and ammunition.:
The suspects were arrested. The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether they may be linked to other crimes.
Both suspects remain in custody and are expected to soon appear before the Kranskop Magistrate’s Court.
