Police in Umzinyathi area arrest two men for illegal guns, drugs and suspected murder links

Police arrest two suspects in Nquthu for firearms, drugs and links to recent murder investigations.

Two men, aged 26 and 54, have been arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and drugs during an intelligence-driven operation in the Nkalankala area, under the Nquthu policing precinct.

The operation was carried out by officers from Umzinyathi District Crime Intelligence, the Glencoe K9 Unit, and the Dundee Crime Prevention Unit. It followed intelligence linking the suspects to two separate murder cases — one in September 2024 and another last month.

Both suspects, who are related, were found at the same homestead. A search of the younger suspect’s apartment led to the recovery of an unlicensed .38 Special revolver with ammunition, along with 501 mandrax tablets.

A separate search of the second suspect’s apartment uncovered two unlicensed pistols with ammunition. All the seized firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in either of the murder cases or other criminal activities.

According to SAPS spokesperson Constable Siyabonga Nkwanyana, both suspects will appear in the Nquthu Magistrate’s Court soon.
