Endumeni celebrates cultural unity at annual traditional event
Community gathers in Wasbank to honour Zulu heritage and promote unity through tradition.
The spirit of Ubuntu and cultural pride came alive on Saturday as Endumeni Local Municipality hosted its second Annual Traditional Event at Wasbank Hall.
The colourful occasion, led by Mayor Cllr A.M. Mkhize in partnership with Mashiqa Media, drew hundreds of residents from Wasbank and surrounding areas to celebrate and honour the rich heritage of the Zulu nation.
The event featured vibrant performances, including izinkondlo (poetry) and ingoma (traditional dance), showcasing the community’s deep appreciation for culture and tradition.
Importance of preserving culture as a way to promote unity
In his address, Mayor Mkhize thanked all participants and highlighted the importance of preserving culture as a way to promote unity, pride and social cohesion among residents. He also encouraged young people to embrace their roots and use culture as a guiding light for their personal growth and identity.
Representing the Office of the Acting Municipal Manager, Mrs C. Mkhize spoke passionately about the importance of maintaining tradition and raising children with strong moral values.
“Raising children within cultural principles helps guide them throughout life, ensuring they do not deviate from positive paths as they mature,” she said.
Mrs Mkhize added that such initiatives play a vital role in shaping the future of young people and tackling social issues such as substance abuse.
“When our children understand and value where they come from, they gain purpose and direction. Cultural education is a strong tool in steering them away from destructive behaviours like drug abuse,” she said.
Ward 1 Councillor Ngcobo also expressed gratitude to the community and Mashiqa Media for their collaboration in making the event a success. He praised the teamwork and community spirit that brought the celebration to life, emphasising that unity between the municipality and residents is key to the success of local initiatives.
The event concluded with song, dance and joyous celebrations, marking yet another successful effort by Endumeni Local Municipality to strengthen cultural identity and community unity.
