Parents share the pressure as matrics write final exams
Parents on how they manage stress and offer support as their children tackle matric final exams.
As matric pupils across the country face their final exams, parents in Endumeni have shared their experiences of supporting their children through this stressful time.
Balancing nerves and encouragement
Proud father AK Ismail said watching his son, Muhammed Ishaq, begin his finals at Durban High School has been both exciting and nerve-wracking.
“It’s a bit of a worry because they’ve worked so hard. As a parent, you just pray they achieve their goals,” he said.
Ismail added that his main role has been offering motivation and encouragement.
“They’re so advanced with technology and learning. Sometimes, all we can do is cheer them on,” he said with a smile.
Despite the pressure, Ismail expressed confidence in his son’s determination.
“I trust he knows what he needs to do. This sets the stage for the next chapter of his life,” he added.
Single parents face extra challenges
For Thandi*, a single mother from Dundee, the past few weeks have been an emotional balancing act.
“It’s stressful keeping her calm while managing work and home. I’ve become her motivator, counsellor and sometimes her study partner,” she said.
In Glencoe, single father Rajen* said the challenge is balancing discipline and emotional support.
“I make sure he has what he needs – quiet space, meals and encouragement – but doing it all alone is tough,” he said.
Another single father, Dylan*, said he helps his son by using past exam papers.
“We can’t afford extra tuition, so I sit with him and go through the work. Sometimes parents have to step in,” he said.
A shared journey
All the parents agreed that while matric exams bring pressure, they also bring pride and unity.
“It’s stressful for everyone,” said Rajen, “but seeing your child push through it makes it worthwhile.”
