While motorists have labelled the R33 between Dundee and Vryheid a “death trap”, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport says maintenance and upgrade plans are under way to improve safety.
Mfundo Wela, an organisational development analyst in the department, said a tender for zonal maintenance closed in February, with adjudication expected to begin soon.
“The project is planned to commence on April 20, subject to final approvals. However, the process could be delayed if appeals are lodged by bidders,” he said.
In the meantime, short-term repairs are ongoing.
“Our internal maintenance team has been conducting blacktop patching and pothole repairs along the route since November 2025. These activities form part of a continuous programme to improve driving conditions,” Wela explained.
A crack sealing project is also scheduled to begin in October 2026 and is expected to be completed by December.
“This intervention is aimed at extending the lifespan of the road surface and preventing further deterioration,” he added.
Road marking has already been completed along a 0–30km stretch to improve visibility and safety.
Despite these efforts, motorists remain sceptical.
“One section of road is often dug up and left without proper warning. Cones are randomly placed, which is dangerous,” said a Dundee motorist.
DA transport spokesperson Riona Gokool said she has engaged with the department and plans to escalate the matter.
“I will be taking the issue to Parliament and asking questions about the condition of the R33,” she said.
