Uthukela women claim SAPS provincial soccer title, with Umzinyathi players earning top awards and national selection.

The Uthukela Former Area women’s team has been crowned champions of the SAPS Provincial Soccer Tournament held in Newcastle on April 29 and 30.

Umzinyathi players dominate awards in winning squad

The tournament, hosted by the former Uthukela Area, brought together teams from Umzinyathi, Uthukela and Amajuba districts.

The Uthukela side delivered a strong performance, defeating Midlands Former Area 3-1 in the final to secure the 2026 title.

Nine players from Umzinyathi District formed part of the winning team, playing a key role throughout the tournament.

SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Siyabonga Nkwanyana praised the team’s achievement.

“The team showed exceptional discipline, teamwork and determination to secure this victory,” he said.

Umzinyathi players also claimed top individual honours, including Goalkeeper of the Tournament, Top Goal Scorer and Player of the Tournament.

Several players have since been selected to represent the KwaZulu-Natal provincial team at the upcoming national tournament.

Team captain Constable Zanemvula Zwane expressed gratitude for the support received.

“We thank our coaches and team manager for their guidance and commitment,” she said.

She also acknowledged the support of Umzinyathi District Commissioner Major General Francis Slambert.

“His assistance with transport and dedicated training time made a significant difference to our preparation,” Zwane added.

Nkwanyana said the achievement reflects the strength of women’s sport within SAPS.

“This success highlights the talent within our ranks and the importance of continued support for women in sport,” he said.
