Police arrest man with unlicensed firearm in Nquthu raid

Police arrested a 50-year-old man after recovering an unlicensed firearm and ammunition during a raid in Nquthu.

A 50-year-old man was arrested with a firearm and ammunition confiscated during an intelligence-driven police operation in the Mbewunye area under the Nquthu policing precinct on Wednesday morning.

According to SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Siyabonga Nkwanyana, police acted on information regarding an unlicensed firearm in the area.

Firearm to undergo ballistic testing

“The operation was conducted with the assistance of Newcastle Public Order Policing members and resulted in the recovery of an unlicensed pistol and ammunition,” said Sergeant Nkwanyana.

The suspect was arrested at the scene and is expected to appear in the Nquthu Magistrate’s Court soon.

Police confirmed that the firearm will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether it may have been used in the commission of other crimes.

Sergeant Nkwanyana said investigations are continuing.
